 the hotel garry isOriginally planned as a 10 story structure, the hotel was set to be named The Selcraig. However before it was completed, Montreal architects St. George A. Ross and David H. MacFarlane added another 2 floors, making it one of the foremost monumental hotels in Western North American nation. The name was also modified to The Fort Garry building as a result of of its shut proximity to higher Fort Garry.

The Fort Garry Hotel is the sole extant remnant in Winnipeg from the age of grand railway hotels engineered for the Canadian Northern Railway. Constructed between 1911 and 1913, the hotel is Manitoba’s solely example of the Château field of study vogue and is sculptured once the Château Laurier in Ottawa. It combines  French the best Gothic qualities, but is clearly Canadian with its exterior facades and expansive wall surfaces created of smooth-cut American state rock. The building features made particularisation, especially the ornamental masonry at the  balcony balustrades atop the bay windows, the cornice a copper roof and a rounded stone turret topped by a two-dimensional figure roof.

The Château style building rose to the height of 192 feet and twelve stories that originally control 340 rooms, the lobby and dining area, the Crystal dance hall and Concert Ballroom.
The Fort Garry Hotel was engineered and operated by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway till the formation and takeover by Canadian National in 1918.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed at The Fort Garry Hotel on July 1, July 1, 1923 during a speaking tour, accompanied by his spouse, Lady Jean and their 3 kids. His schedule included press interviews, luncheons, phsysic service and a lecture Over the decades dozens of other notable personalities enjoyed the cordial reception of the building, including Nelson Eddy, Rudy Vallee ,Charles Boyer Nat King Cole, Victor Borge, Basil Rathbone,  Lawrence Olivier, mantovani,liberace, Joan Crawford, Arthur Fiedler, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Arm- sturdy, Benny Goodman, Jack Dempsey, Jean Belliveau,  Field Mar- shall Montgomery,bobby hull several prime ministers as well as Lester Pearson and King St. George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
In 1924, a system of  the radio stations was developed for the CN passengers and everybody who may decide up the signal.

On Dec. 7, 1971, the hotel’s two ballrooms was seventh floor between  the scene of a hearth. It was quickly contained and every one 95 building guests got out safely as well as Jack and Olive Brooks from Swan watercourse, landed of the front page of the Winnipeg Free Press following day. Although fireplace and water injury to the prime 3 floors was significant, the first 3 floors of the building remained open whereas renovations transpire.
